Sommelier Audit Deconstruction

Russian River, founded by Vinnie Cilurzo and now based in Windsor, is one of the two or three most influential names in American craft beer history, and Pliny the Elder is a big part of why. It's the double IPA that much of the West Coast DIPA style got measured against for years — balanced, resinous, and endlessly imitated but rarely matched. The brewery's other pillar is just as important to serious drinkers: a Belgian-inspired sour program built on the same rigor Cilurzo brought to hop-forward beer, blending wild fermentation and barrel aging into sours that stand alongside the DIPAs as genuine benchmarks in their own category. Few breweries anywhere can claim to have defined two entirely different styles at the same time, and Russian River did exactly that. Haliʻā watches Russian River for both halves of that legacy — hop-driven DIPAs that need to travel cold to preserve their signature balance, and barrel-aged sours built for exactly the kind of patient, temperature-controlled shipping a drop-box program is designed around. Oʻahu readers: a Russian River drop is about as close as beer culture gets to a must-have — this is the brewery half the craft world still measures itself against.
