Cocoweizen — Honolulu Beerworks

Evaluating unpasteurized expressions after ocean transport requires strict thermal controls. When buying Monkish beer in Hawaii or sourcing other mainland craft allocations, local collectors frequently encounter oxidized characteristics. Heat spikes on tarmacs and cargo container baking typically compromise the yeast and hop profile before the cans reach Honolulu shelves.
This batch of Cocoweizen was shipped under our strict 38°F trans-pacific cold corridor, resulting in a pristine presentation. The mouthfeel is exceptionally clean, with the hop aromatics completely intact.
Cocoweizen is Honolulu Beerworks' spin on a traditional hefeweizen, taking the wheat beer's signature banana-and-clove yeast character and layering toasted coconut on top of it. At 5.5% ABV, it stays true to the hefeweizen's light, sessionable roots, with a hazy, pale-gold pour and a soft, effervescent mouthfeel. Expect that classic clove-and-banana ester up front, followed by toasted coconut sweetness that reads more like a subtle accent than an overwhelming addition, and a finish that stays light and refreshing rather than syrupy. At 8.1 out of 10, Cocoweizen earned strong marks on the Haliʻā ledger as proof that a fruit or flavor addition doesn't have to overpower a base style to work — it just has to fit. It's the kind of beer that rewards a hefeweizen drinker looking for something a little different without abandoning the style's character. Honolulu Beerworks helped pioneer the Kakaʻako brewing scene, and a beer like Cocoweizen shows the local instinct at work: taking a European classic and giving it an island-appropriate twist that feels native to Oʻahu rather than gimmicky, a fitting ambassador for what Honolulu craft beer tastes like right now.
