Pillbox Porter — Lanikai Brewing Co.

Evaluating unpasteurized expressions after ocean transport requires strict thermal controls. When buying Monkish beer in Hawaii or sourcing other mainland craft allocations, local collectors frequently encounter oxidized characteristics. Heat spikes on tarmacs and cargo container baking typically compromise the yeast and hop profile before the cans reach Honolulu shelves.
This batch of Pillbox Porter was shipped under our strict 38°F trans-pacific cold corridor, resulting in a pristine presentation. The mouthfeel is exceptionally clean, with the hop aromatics completely intact.
Pillbox Porter is Lanikai Brewing Co.'s coconut porter, a dark, roasty base built around Hawaiian and Tahitian vanilla — a layering of two distinct vanilla bean traditions that gives the beer more depth than a single-origin version would. At 6.5% ABV, it sits at a comfortable, sessionable weight for a dark beer this flavorful. Expect roasted malt and dark chocolate up front, toasted coconut and warm, complex vanilla through the middle, and a finish that stays smooth and dessert-leaning without turning cloying. An 8.5 out of 10 makes Pillbox Porter one of the highest-scoring beers on the whole Haliʻā ledger, and it earned that mark as a genuine showcase beer — proof that a coconut porter, done with real ingredient care, can compete with far bigger, boozier stouts on flavor alone. Named for the historic pillbox lookouts above Lanikai and Kailua, Pillbox Porter carries its sense of place literally in its name, and it stands as one of the clearest arguments for Hawaiʻi's dark beer tradition: rich, tropical, and built on ingredients — Hawaiian and Tahitian vanilla, toasted coconut — that read as unmistakably local rather than novelty add-ons.
